Chloroform?

I've always wondered what it really is, i know it can knock you out, but can you buy it in shops ? does it full on knock you out or just make you drunk like ? if it knock you out then for how long ? i know it isnt a great source to gather info from but on the simpsons ( lol ) they sniff a rag with chloroform in and then go all sleepy and weird. So any answers to multiple questions ?
Answer:
Chloroform is a chlorinated hydrocarbon with a formula of CHCl3. It is a liquid a room temperature but has a high vapor pressure and a low boiling point (61潞C). It was found way back in the easy 1800's that chloroform had anesthetic qualities when inhaled, and would causes an individual to lose consciousness in a large enough dosage.
It was later discovered that chloroform was indeed a carcinogen, which lead to it's - NON-USE.
You cannot buy it - it is a controlled substance and is used is too many drug making experimental laboratories to be solid outright to the public, not to mention it IS a carcinogen. It can knock you out, but not immediately as you see in the movies, you would have to have the handkerchief cupped over your nose and mouth for over a minute cutting off all air to make that work.
I have no idea how long it would knock you out for. I believe they used to repeat the dose a interval to keep the patient "under" so I don't think to effect last too long - maybe a couple of minutes.
Some trivial knowledge.I find it interesting that doctors used to use chloroform as an anesthesia during childbirth. Knowing the harm that it does, its amazing that chloroform has not contributed to more incidences of cancer and other problems.
