I haven't been offered a place to study medicine and get my results back tomorrow. Where are the best places to ring for clearing, and what grades are required.
I may get AABB or ABBB worst case ABBC BIO CHEM PHYS MATH
Also do any universities consider resit applicants for the folowing year??
thank you so much for youre hel[p
Answer:
I work on a Foundation Course at a leading University that does medicine. I dont think you'd get a place on medicine at any university via clearing, its just way too competitive, people have to apply v early in October of the year before they wish to commence study to even be considered.
Our university dont tend to consider applicants who have had to resit their a-levels to acheive the necessary grades, due to the amount of choice they already have of other students, but this wont be the case for all unis, it would be a case of ringing departments and asking! Nor does our medicine course allow students to transfer onto theircourse as it is usually completely full and couldnt accomodate any students coming onto it frm other degrees, and its def out if you've already been rejected frm that department.
There are courses that provide access to medicine and foundation courses actually ran at the university that do give a possibility of progressing to medicine, but ours for example dont take students who have already done a-levels and not suceeded to get the grades or have been rejected from our department. If you have the necessary grades no access course would accept you either as theyre for people lacking qualifications and so would give you no benefit. Medcine is v competitive and there is much more they consider as well as grades i.e. amount of experience in health care settings such as shadowing GP, volunteering in care homes etc, amount of general voluntray exp such as working with a charity, commitment to studying medicine, reasons fro wanting to study medicine and your understanding of the profession. Look on unis webistes for hints what theyre looking for.
Postgard entry is very possible, many students at our uni do biomed degrees or similar and then go on to gain acceptance after completion of the degree to study medicine even when previously rejected 3 years earlier. The degree gives the science knowledge for those not quite up to scatch in that way and shows commitment that you are ailling to take a degree and then apply to medicine, though i appreciate its an expensive option and one with no guarantees.
Id say if you got the grades but were just rejected, then increase health care and general voluntary exp, work on personal statement using hints from websites that tell you what medicine departments want i.e. the unis website, or google getting accepted to medicine, also good prep for interview as most medicine departments do interview, and apply early for 2008.
If you didnt get the grades but theyre good enough for biology or biomed degree at a uni you can get into this year then you coud try this way. Many people who did get the grades do also go onto to do a biology or biomed or similar degree and then apply to medicine as, as i said really cant emphasise enough the level of competition, and just getting the grades isnt enough. Dont give up if medicine really is your dream!
